Review: Best Hip-Hop Show of the Year

I’ve been to many concerts in 2023. Ranging from big acts like Future, to smaller acts such as Vinny West. lil Yachty and the Concrete Family, by far delivered one, if not the best, hip-hop concert of 2023.

Starting off with the opening acts, the Concrete Family and NICK HAKIM . CAMO! came out first to start the showoff. Upon coming on stage, he was determined to immediately get the crowd hype, which he did just that. Following his set was the first lady of Concrete, Karrah Booo. Though she only has a handful of songs, she knows how to handle a crowd with ease.  DC2trill came next. He comes off as the most laid-back out of the group, but don’t let that fool you, he kept the crowd’s energy up just like his peers. The final Concrete member to hit the stage was Draft Day. By far the most hype and excited member of the newcomers. There was never a dull moment or, in this case, a pit that wasn’t being moshed. Altogether, the chemistry this family has was beautiful to witness. No egos, no bad vibes, just a family doing what they love. As a frequent concert-goer, you don’t witness many moments like that on stage.

NICK HAKIM brought a calmness to the rowdy crowd. I couldn’t help but feel like I was in a sound healing session. From his vocalists to his guitarists, June McDoom and Evan Wright, the energy of the room felt peaceful. It was just the thing the crowd needed as it was the calm before the storm.

Yachty…I came into this show with no knowledge of the setlist or any expectations. He created an unforgettable night for me. His set started off with his all-female band, which immediately caught my eye. Not many artists are willing to take a chance on an all-female Black band, but Yachty did. These women came in and immediately started displaying their talent and why they were chosen to be on this tour. Yachty casually came on and performed some of his most melodic songs. Quickly I learned, Yachty was going to take the audience on an immersive experience. I fell into, what I can only call, a trance. From the vocals, the instrumentation, the visuals, and the ambiance provided by the crowd, everything coupled together felt like I was lost in space. Yachty quickly switched it up by performing his most hype and popular songs such as “Strike (Holster)”, “ From The D To The A ”, and “Minnesota”, along with many others. Ending the show, Yachty brought us back into a trance-like state. Delivering stellar vocals, visuals, and even a guitar solo from one of his band members, Quenequia and Leah Grace

I couldn’t help feeling fulfilled coming out of this concert. The Field Trip Tour truly provided an amazing experience, that coincidentally enough was reminiscent of my adolescent extravagant field trips. I now know I will never miss a Yachty concert in Vegas.
