On a surprisingly chilly May evening, Montclair, NJ’s Wellmont Theater found itself swarmed by a mob of fans buzzing in anticipation. Thousands filled the blocks surrounding the venue in what may have quite easily been its longest line in years. After a five-year touring hiatus, R&B sensation Bryson Tiller had finally returned to the road and was ready to deliver a night to remember. Doors to the venue opened and a cluster of fans wearing Trap soul tees & other various Tiller merch items rushed forward, eager to secure a prime spot close to the stage. As the floor filled in, other fans opted to grab drinks or hop In line for the sleek 80’s inspired tour hoodies & shirts available for purchase. After an hour of anticipation, the house lights went down and DJ Nitrane, the tour’s single opening act, took the stage.

Nitrane played to the vibe of the room perfectly,

Immediately turning the packed house into a singalong party of R&B smash hits. The sounds of tracks such as “Kill Bill” by SZA & “Rehab (Winter in Paris)” by Brent Faiyaz filled the building as the sold-out audience hit every single word. The vibe was set & it was clear that Tiller was about to walk out to one of his most engaged crowds yet.

After playing Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” to end his set on a high energy note, Nitrane left the stage and the lights immediately went back down.

Following a few minutes of anxious anticipation, the house lights flashed for a brief second and a mass of brightly lit phones & screams filled the air. A quick intro video played on multiple arcade cabinets repurposed into screens & just like that, Tiller appeared onstage. Wearing a Ghostbusters hat, Nintendo Powerglove & Nike Back to the Future Air Mags, he was fully committed to his signature nostalgia-heavy image. The booming drums & speedy flow of his 2021 mixtape deep cut “Money Dance” served as the evening’s introduction, transitioning right into his Big Sean collaboration, “Still Yours”. The energy was immediately high and the tone was set.

Bouncing from hit to hit, the beaming energy from both Tiller and the audience never let down. Singalong anthems such as “Exchange” and “Let ‘Em Know” were instant standouts, made even better by the impressive flashy light setup onstage. Deep red and blue tones filled the room at multiple points, making it feel as if we’d physically stepped into the iconic covers of projects such as “Trapsoul” & “Anniversary”. As an artist known for providing his fans with moody nighttime vibes, Tiller and his team certainly did just that. The undeniable standout of the night was a passionate performance of his breakout smash hit “Don’t”, with thousands of passionate fans screaming it word for word. The show came to a bittersweet end after just over an hour of endless bangers, with fans being sent home feeling absolutely exhilarated. The theater lobby filled as massive lines formed for merch and many rushed to social media to share clips and photos. The vibes were high as one of R&B’s biggest stars had delivered a shared experience that certainly won’t be forgotten. On this chilly NJ evening, Bryson Tiller made it clear that he was indeed, just like the name of his tour, back and better.
